The History of Church Music, PowerPoint:
Author: Gene White
This presentation provides the history of the church music starting with the
Jewish Temple Music based on chants and using multiple instruments. The style of
music persisted until the Temple was destroyed in A.D. 70 and the Jewish people
were dispersed to other regions. This led to the development of Synagogue music
based on local melodies but structured on what was passed down from Temple
music, plus a little Roman music. The initial Christian music was in the form of
chanting styled after that of the Temple; in later times it became known as the
Benedictine or Gregorian chants.
As we move through the centuries, we find additional improvements in music notation and finally to the notation of today. At this point we delve into the anatomy of a hymn, the meaning of contemporary and finally modern religious songs. Examples of these are provided along with embedded music and lyrics and a few you may sing along with the example. All music and lyrics are Public Doman or provided for free if the use is free.
